Most baffling toilet sign yet

This post is about the obviously mysterious fish slicing prohibition, but the one on the bottom left forbidding people to steal toilet paper raises nearly as many questions. I mean, can you think of anywhere in the world where it would be news to people that it’s not A-OK to nick a public toilet roll? Or that anyone intent on absconding with free wipes would be deterred by some signage?

It’s no longer odd to see signs in heavy tourist areas begging people not to use a Western toilet like a squat toilet or exhorting clueless foreigners not to flush anything but toilet paper, but WHAT THE HECKIN’ HECK is that middle one in the bottom row?

Slicing up sushi in this toilet stall near the Hakone Shrine is apparently a big no-no (OK, can I just squeal EWWWW for a moment here?) but why did they feel the need to forbid such an unlikely activity?

Turns out, this one isn’t aimed at tourists! There’s a popular fishing spot near this bathroom, and more than one local angler has apparently had the bright idea of flushing the innards after filleting his catch instead of packing them back home to stink up his own trash.

If you enjoy exploring back streets and thinking about stuff that makes you pause…

  1. We stay at a motel in Fort Bragg where there are signs by the trash bins telling fishing people to not put fish parts in the trash. So far no signs in the bathrooms….
