Please don’t pee on the artifact

It’s not unusual to find some small traditional remnant of the once-grand Japanese house that used to occupy insanely valuable land that’s now home to a multi-story Tokyo apartment building, but I was still delighted to see this lovely, artfully-gnarled bashira doorpost holding up a portico in the back streets near the Nezu Museum.

Not so delighted, however, that even in Japan, they had to put up this sign. Which politely asks pet owners not to let their dog mistake this venerable piece of history for a fire hydrant. 😱😱😱

If you enjoy exploring back streets and thinking about stuff that makes you pause…

  1. Love this. I have thought of you so many times and wondered how your son’s wedding was.

    1. I saw that you moved! Your new place looks lovely, and I hope you’re settling in nicely. Thankfully, no weddings until next month. It’s still hotter than Hades here UGH and I would not want to be swanning around in a black kimono in this heat!

      1. Enjoy❣️ Weddings are a big deal. Hope it cools off.
