Glass artist Nobuyuki Fujiwara’s delightfully organic pieces explode and bloom with energy, and a selection of his recent works is being featured in this lovely retirement retrospective at the University Art Museum’s exhibition hall right now.
His willingness to push glass techniques and technology in whole new directions results in some surprising pieces…
and his restrained color palette puts the focus squarely on the unique textures he achieves.
And among the purely sculptural pieces are a set of whimsical vessels that exhibit a fluid inventiveness that hints at his long career of experimenting with different forms.
But this retrospective doesn’t just feature his own work—many of his students at Tokyo University of the Arts have gone on to become professional glass artists themselves, and their work pays homage to their professor’s interest in unique approaches to what glass can be.
They utilize interesting production techniques…
sometimes producing pieces that could almost be ceramic…
except that they subtly sparkle with crystalline structures…
or glow from within through subtle colors.

Gorgeous pieces. I wonder if any of his later pieces were influenced by Dale Chihuily?

I wondered the same thing!
Love these. There was a modern glass exhibit
They were much more beautiful than the pictures! Sadly, the gallery was a bit shabby, so it was hard to take photos that showed them off in their full glory (>_<)
Wow! These are absolutely stunning pieces.
