Strange sights are a dime a dozen on the streets of Roppongi at night, but this is the first time I’ve encountered a giant inflatable banana skin.
Welcome to the 2024 version of Roppongi Art Night, which was smaller than in years past, but featured some choice pieces that were worth braving a rainy night to go see.
First up was the Mori Tower in bondage. Knotted pink ropes kept the entrance to the West Walk in thrall, as if the iconic Louise Bourgeois spider sculpture had come to life overnight and expanded her claim to the plaza.
But it’s the Arena area that was beckoning the crowds last night…
with an installation of giant iridescent spheres that changed color with the music and dance performances staged periodically throughout the evening. In between, photo ops were available for VIP guests…
as the spheres cycled through the rainbow from blue…
to yellow
to pink…
And although the other art pieces were rather fewer than before and spread out between Roppongi Hills and Tokyo Midtown, it wasn’t easy to miss them. Like this vibrant sculpture…
and these whimsical dinos.
And it wouldn’t be a Roppongi Art Night without Hibiki whisky’s usual tasting bar set up front and center to get the evening off to an expansive start.
If you’re in Tokyo, go see this show this weekend because it’s only on for three days.
