Art brings light into the chilly heart of Toranomon

All the usual glowing things are joined by some unexpected guests!

Gazing up at Tokyo Tower from the perpetual construction zone at street level around Toranomon Hills delivers a first glimpse of the art that’s breathing a little life into the stark and chilly office towers of Tokyo’s newest mega-office complex. Seven delightful sculptures are lighting up the winter night within a short meander of Toranomon Hills Station right now!

Inside the train station building as you ascend the escalator to the level where the rest of the art is, these giant polyhedrons slowly rotate and reflect…

“Five Stars” by OMA NY/Shohei Shigematsu (USA)

and on your way across the bridge to the rest of the pieces, stop to say hi to the whimsical scribbled pedestrians you spotted from below

“My Light is Your Light” by alaa minawi (Lebanon)

Over the bridge and through the building is a plaza with this mesmerizing neon sculpture…

“Nest” by Vikas Patil & Santosh Gujar (India)

that cycles through a rainbow of color combos as you circle it

Turn around to find the big lawn behind you transformed into a field of fireflies bobbing around the permanent symbol man sculpture…

Then meander along a little further to where a string of color-changing abstract butterflies lights the way down the steps that lead to the street on the other side of the block

And finally, let’s backtrack to the lawn with the fireflies and walk along the bottom edge, continuing straight across the pedestrian bridge linking it to the building next door. To your left, watch for some stairs that lead down to street level, where a neon tornado awaits your viewing pleasure…

Toranomon Light Art will be up through January 8, 2024
