If dragons are on your fantasy bucket list, get thee to Ryōanji temple in Kyoto and feast your eyes on these beauties! From now through March 31, 2023, the legendary lizards take over Ryōanji temple in Kyoto, and they do not disappoint!
Imagine having a real live dragon to bork at burglars!
Or one that swoops in to nail that tie-breaking goal in the final seconds
This one just posted the perfect meme
And this one heard you opening that can of Dragon Feast from two rooms away
This one really should have put his name on that pint of Chunky Monkey that was in the freezer…
And I’m kind of wondering what these two smell in that corner cupboard, but perhaps it would be best not get there first, lest they decide to eliminate the competition before battling it out
These lovelies were all painted by Morihiro Hosokawa after he quit his day job as prime minister, and I think you’ll agree it’s a pity he wasted so many years battling dragons of the economic and political variety instead of inking even moar flying lizards.

When: November 1, 2023 – March 31, 2024

Not coming till May sadly , amazing display . Will they be seen elsewhere ?
I’m sorry you’re going to miss the dragon exhibit at Ryoanji! If you want to see whether they are on display elsewhere while you’re there, trying googling your dates plus the name of the artist plus dragon paintings. If there’s nothing in English, try again in Japanese (Google Translate is your friend!) You may discover that alas, Japan is Japan, and that which is here today is gone tomorrow, never to return until its season rolls around again BUT there’s always something equally delightful to take its place. So keep your eyes open in May, and I hope you see something you enjoy even more!
I hate to expose my ignorance like this but I’ve had a framed tapestry image of the Zen garden hanging on my wall for three decades and never realized they were tigers. I was convinced they were snow leopards. Silly me.
You and me: in same boat. Snow leopards swimming all around.
