Lost In A Forest Of Blooming Plum Trees

Yesterday I got to stumble around doing a 360˚ gawk in a forest of plum trees wearing all their favorite clothes at once.

Kairakuen Garden in Mito was planted by a genius of a daimyo who totally got that too much of a good thing is never enough. 2,490 fluffy-branched trees later, I think I can safely say that this is the plum blossom extravaganza to end all plum blossom extravaganzas….

Writing mystery books set in Tokyo is mostly what I do, but I also blog about the odd stuff I see every day in Japan. I'm a graduate of Stanford University and the Sendagaya Japanese Institute in Tokyo, and a member of the International Thriller Writers, the Mystery Writers of America, and Sisters In Crime. When I'm not in Tokyo, I live in San Francisco. I also host a travel site called The Tokyo Guide I Wish I'd Had, so if you're headed to Japan and want to check out the places I take my friends when they're in town, take a look!
Thanks for sharing these photos. This is definitely what I miss seeing the most this time of year.
I know, right? When I miss springtime in Japan, the flowers wherever I am all seem to bloom at the wrong time, and not in NEAR huge enough quantities!
So beautiful and aachoooo!

Yes, allergy season is here too…with a vengeance! Everyone in Tokyo claims it’s the cedar trees.
So beautiful! Thanks for sharing with us!
You’re welcome, my friend! The plums must be beautiful up in Oregon right about now too, right?
They might be beautiful on the other side of the mountains, but over here in Oregon Outback, High Desert, not much shows up but lots of sagebrush. I love it, really. But I do miss lots of greenery and blooming things. So, thanks for sharing! 😉 I can practically smell spring in your pics!
This was what I was looking forward to seeing six years ago, I was scheduled to visit Japan in late March of 2011. Fukushima disaster hit the week before I was to leave.
Oh no! What a terrible hit of bad luck! Did you have a chance to reschedule? Because if not (as you can see!) I hope you will! ヽ(*^ω^*)ノ
Pure wonder!
