Gotta Catch Them ALL

NekoAtsume

I was wandering through Akihabara doing important book research SHUT UP, when I discovered the key to collecting all those damnably elusive kittehs in Neko Atsume: put out lots & lots & LOTS of hundred yen coins and you can attract these. For those of us whose primary life goal is luring animated cats to visit our phones DON’T JUDGE, now there’s a way to capture our favorites in real life!

I'll be needing several dozen more phone in order to accomodate all these mic jack danglers
This might get expensive, since I will be needing several dozen more phones in order to accommodate all these mic jack danglers
And surely I can find many many stacks of papers that are calling out to be clipped together with these
But fortunately I’m going to soon find out that I’m richer than Tubbs, once I use these to clip together the bank statement-like papers now sitting woefully unfiled on my desk
And of course since mostly what author do is lie around on their chaise lounges sipping fine cognac, these will definitely come in handy
And of course – since mostly what authors do is lie around on their chaise lounges sipping fine cognac – I’ll need some of these. A whole set, in fact, in case I acquire some friends.
And I think I'm developing a dangerous case of cold bum, which will certainly be cured by wearing these fluffy underpants
And what’s the point of being a writer and working at home if you can’t knock out a few chapters dressed in your favorite King Of Tattoo t-shirt and these fluffy kitteh underpants?
And would these look better hanging from my rear view mirror or my backpack? Nah, why decide? Both.
Would these look better hanging from my rear view mirror or my backpack? OK duh, we know the answer to that: both.
Then, whoa, feeling lucky, I fed my last coins into this awesome gachagacha machine I spotted on the way back to the train station, and got THESE!
If you’re feeling really lucky (and I was, oh yes, I was!) you can stuff your last coins into the awesome gachagacha machine I spotted on the way back to the train station, and get THESE!
But you'll be happy to know that I haven't taken total leave of my senses, because a few days later at Nakano Broadway when I saw this claw machine I RESISTED. (Because DUH that way lies madness WE ALL KNOW THAT.)

If you’d like to snag some of these beauties for yourself, the clips and danglers and drinking glasses and backpack stuffies can be bought inside the corner shop across from the doll parts store on the 5th floor of the Radio Kaikan Building, near Akihabara Station. (A map is on my website The Tokyo Guide I Wish I’d Had.) The underpants were being sold at a sock shop in Shibuya near the BAPE store, and I already made the mistake of telling you that the claw machine is at Nakano Broadway, so you’re just going to have to try to avoid that whole area of Tokyo, sorry.

If you’d like to visit the Akihabara area the next time you’re in Tokyo, directions & maps are on my website, The Tokyo Guide I Wish I’d Had.

Writing mystery books set in Tokyo is mostly what I do, but I also blog about the odd stuff I see every day in Japan. I'm a graduate of Stanford University and the Sendagaya Japanese Institute in Tokyo, and a member of the International Thriller Writers, the Mystery Writers of America, and Sisters In Crime. When I'm not in Tokyo, I live in San Francisco. I also host a travel site called The Tokyo Guide I Wish I'd Had, so if you're headed to Japan and want to check out the places I take my friends when they're in town, take a look!

    • Yeah, that’s the problem every time I’m in Tokyo – I pretty much have to PLAN a trip to the post office on the day I leave, because my suitcase is full of Neko Atsume merch and there’s not room for my clothes!

  2. This country is definitely the place to come if you love cats. Love those fuzzy underpants-but talk about a visible panty line!

    • Which is why you have to just wear them like pants. Which pretty much only works if you’re a writer. Lucky for you, you ARE, so get thee to the Atsume Neko shitagi store and get crackin’!
