Doughnuts With Ice Cream And Popcorn On Top

Every once in a while you see a food mash-up that nearly sends you into insulin shock just by looking at it. I admit I say yes to sugar about 99% of the time – rain or shine, day or night – but when I saw these doughnut sundaes at the Shinjuku Krispy Kreme attempting to capitalize on the current popcorn fad* I JUST COULDN’T.

*Hour and a half lines outside the popcorn store in Harajuku WHY?
If you’d like to visit a Japanese Krispy Kreme store the next time you’re in Tokyo, a map is on my website, The Tokyo Guide I Wish I’d Had.

Read a novel set in Tokyo

Writing mystery books set in Tokyo is mostly what I do, but I also blog about the odd stuff I see every day in Japan. I'm a graduate of Stanford University and the Sendagaya Japanese Institute in Tokyo, and a member of the International Thriller Writers, the Mystery Writers of America, and Sisters In Crime. When I'm not in Tokyo, I live in San Francisco. I also host a travel site called The Tokyo Guide I Wish I'd Had, so if you're headed to Japan and want to check out the places I take my friends when they're in town, take a look!
People are zombies. If you tell them that eating dog food is red hot, they’ll line up to do it.
Have you been baffled by that popcorn thing too? I mean, the line is blocks long at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday morning, and the place doesn’t open until at least ten! Once I stopped by the hot new ZakuZaku stick cream puff joint in Shinjuku station and the employee standing at the end of the line with the sign asked me if an hour and twenty minute wait was OK. I said absolutely not! I mean, their cream puff thingies are good, but not THAT good!
It’s a mystery, isn’t it? I understand people wanting to get in on whatever is trendy at the moment, but popcorn is just…popcorn.
Current popcorn fad? Never thought I’d say it, but I’ve been obsessed with popcorn BEFORE it was cool in Japan.
Also worth noting: today is our official weigh-ins and I think I may have gained like eight pounds looking at those.
Shhh, don’t tell! They’ll make me start disclosing calorie counts on my blog posts, and I’ll lose all my readers, since I mostly only write about Japanese pizza, burgers, beer and donuts! 😀
