Writing mystery books set in Tokyo is mostly what I do, but I also blog about the odd stuff I see every day in Japan.     • You are so right! You know, it’s weird, but lots of Japanese “parfaits” have cornflakes in them. I thought, “Hunh?” until I ate one, and the crunchiness actually added a lot to the experience! I discovered something about Japanese cuisine, which is that they consciously enjoy texture as well as taste and appearance. Sometimes this is a bad thing (they like slimy stuff, for example, something I am utterly unable to appreciate) but often it’s really amazing. I have learned a lot, but often feel kind of handicapped in the appreciation arena, like a person without perfect pitch listening to a concert in the midst of a whole audience who has that ability.
