Goodnight, Sun

Was I the only one in Tokyo who was waiting for it to get DARK during this morning’s solar eclipse? I mean, for the past week we’ve been bombarded with notices warning of disruptions likely to occur because of this once-in-a-lifetime event, and assuring us that anybody who dared look at the sun while it was happening would be punished by going BLIND. I was eagerly anticipating walking to my morning train in eerie twilight, experiencing the unnatural dimming of the sun that supposedly terrified primitive peoples into sacrificing all their virgins etc. etc.

But no. It just seemed sort of…gloomy.

On the other hand, I did enjoy watching all my fellow commuters standing on the platform with their Carnival-esque safety masks, looking like they were waiting for a 3-D showing of the apocalypse…
