Giant Rubber Bugs
Surely you know someone who would want a two-foot tall, anatomically correct, rubber cockroach staring at them while they watch TV? Apparently, the buyer at Tokyu Hands believes that not only are there people who would be happy to spend ¥5000 on such an item, but they’d jump at the chance to complete their sets with a praying mantis as well.

Writing mystery books set in Tokyo is mostly what I do, but I also blog about the odd stuff I see every day in Japan. I'm a graduate of Stanford University and the Sendagaya Japanese Institute in Tokyo, and a member of the International Thriller Writers, the Mystery Writers of America, and Sisters In Crime. When I'm not in Tokyo, I live in San Francisco. I also host a travel site called The Tokyo Guide I Wish I'd Had, so if you're headed to Japan and want to check out the places I take my friends when they're in town, take a look!
no no no no no.
All I can say is if someone in my house were to buy the gokiburi, I am damned sure buying the mantis.
I’d be buying the giant rubber can of Raid.
Amen!!!!
Errrrr……………yeah? I know this is a very very old post but everyone I know adores insects, my spouse and my roommate and at least twelve friends keep various species of cockroach as pets and we think they’re all nothing but adorable, beautiful, amazing animals. Frankly I think people who just find them “gross” have been brainwashed by extremely stupid media norms and would love insects as much as we do if they ever cared to understand them 😦
Arg, as I reread this, I’m sorry I cast aspersions on people who DO want giant rubber bugs staring at them from atop the TV, and I especially apologize to you (and your friends), who find them more sympatico than I do. My own anti-gokiburi bias is rooted in being surprised by them in small enclosed spaces, but even though I can’t feel fondly toward them, it was wrong to suggest THAT’s not weird, but liking them is. I’ll amend the post and take that part out. Thank you for pointing it out, and I’m sorry reading my post made your day worse, not better ( ; _ ; )
